#9: Week 3

Clara, you are already approaching a month old. It’s incredible how time works when you’re taking care of a newborn. I cannot describe adequately how strange it is that it’s already been 3 weeks and also that everyday feels entirely too short and also infinite.

The pediatrician confirmed at your appointment early this week that you gained a pound over your birth weight, which is a big deal! At the time you weighed as much as Uncle Austin when he was born. You share a lot of looks with him too when he was your age.

Gramma Joeaux left this week, and I was very sad about it. We’re so very grateful for her help, and if I think anymore about it, I’ll cry. I hope one day to pass that favor on to you, Clara, and to respect you and your little family as deeply as Gramma Joeaux has.

Elimination Communication (EC) has been going ok overall this week. I have been frustrated that I can’t meet your needs 100% of the time, but I’m trying to give myself grace. This week like last week has been tough on me, but I think you’re getting used to being in this big world a bit better. You’re opening your eyes more, making more sounds and faces and appearing much better rested than previous weeks.

On to your weeklies:

  • Your favorite thing right now is being bounced on my knee and/or having your back patted. You’re often uncomfortable with the little bubbles in your tummy, and nothing calms you down better than being held at a 45 degree angle with multiple movements happening. It can be difficult to hold you this way, but really calming to know you feel better.
  • Your Papá and I are particularly proud of your attempts to cue us this week on needing to use the potty. You tried out a different cry to help signal (I think). We’re still getting the hang of it.
  • You light up when Papá takes you by the window to look at the light.
  • The most memorable things about you this week are how much you struggled to sleep, the appearance of the witching hour, and your first meeting of mommy’s friend, Auntie Janet, Gramma’s friend Kristin, and our family friend, Great-Aunt Peggy.
  • Firsts this week include:
    • Breastfeeding in public (in our neighborhood while out walking)
    • Use of a bib to catch all your spit up
    • Lots of spit-up
  • New nicknames? honey, little milk goblin/gremlin, huevo (I can’t remember if that one was said yet), huevo kinder

We love you, Clara.
